CASHEL 1916
Amid the great national celebrations of 1916 over the past few weeks, we should not forget the men of Cashel who played their part in the rising.
Pe Hopkins of Drumnee, then in his 90th year recalled his comrades.
“ I joined at 18 years of age, to tell the truth, i did not know what i was joining. There was 77 in our company and only one is still alive, Willie Hanley. Later he joined the Guards in Sligo. Our work was a back up for the Flying Column, cutting down trees on roads, messengers, and arranging safe houses. Bill Clarke of St Island was in charge of us and the Flying Column was led by Barney Garahan. I remember when peace came, we lit a great bonfire on Ballyreevagh hill where the quarry is. We saw more bonfires on St John’s hill, Sliabh Bawn and Ardagh hill”
We hope during the 200th celebrations that some historian going through the pages of the Longford Leader will read of those brave men who played their part in the Easter Rising.
