New Football Jerseys

Rock Investigation
Pictured are 5th and 6th Class students examining various rock types and features. They completed a variety of tasks and investigations at various work-stations.

Tree and Hedgerow Walk
Junior & Senior Infants enjoyed a tree and hedgerow walk in the school-grounds recently to identify five deciduous trees and some Autumn fruits.

Nanoscience Experiments
Pictured are 5th and 6th class students carrying out Nanoscience experiments outside recently. Here, the students were experimenting with Surface Area by comparing two ‘mini-explosions’.

GAA – Football Training
Pupils from First Class – Fourth Class have started football training with Paddy on a Tuesday morning. Training will be on the following dates – 23rd September and the 7th, 14th, 21st of October.
Children are reminded to bring their football gear and mouth guards for these dates.

Lenrec Recyclers
On Tuesday 16th September Lenrec Recyclers collected bags of clothes from the school. Each bag collected earned €6.00 to go towards school funds.
All wardrobes in Cashel must be uncluttered now. Thanks to all who contributed to the collection. Your donations are much appreciated!

Quarry Park Walk
On Thursday 18/09/14 First Class – Sixth Class visited Quarry Park. We all had a wonderful morning/afternoon where Michael Casey guided us around the various stone sculptures. Michael ensured that it was an enjoyable and interesting learning experience for all involved (both adults and children).
The staff and pupils would like to thank Michael who gave of his time.

Welcome Back
Welcome back to school to everyone, we look forward to a productive year ahead.
Welcome especially to the 13 new junior infants who started in Mrs. Dervin’s room.

Sports day
Today was sports day and what a fantastic day we had!
We started off the day with races for each age group.  There was running races, sack, three legged and egg & spoon races.
We then had great fun on the bouncy castles.  Thank you to Sean & Ciara Byrne’s dad Alan who provided them for the day.  It was a great surprise.
Ms. Casserly set up a fantastic obstacle course for everyone.
1st and 2nd class were very lucky because they got to play some parachute games with Mrs. Dervin at the end of the day.

Green Flag
We started our day off today with the raising of our 5th green flag for biodiversity.  Gary Brady from Longford County Council was there to raise the flag.  It was a beautiful morning and it was great to see a few parents and others there for the occasion.  Thank you to everyone who helped us achieving this flag.  The infants made a beautiful card for Tilla to thank her for all her help this year.

Knitting update

Swimming
The boys and girls from 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th are enjoying swimming lessons in Roscommon swimming pool.  They enjoy the journey there & back too! There is only two lessons left this year, they are next Wednesday and Thursday.

Mrs. Dervin’s class were busy practicing their basketball skills with Joe today. They had great fun!

Mini Beast Hunt
Ms. Stenson’s class went on a mini beast hunt to the Quarry Park.  We met Michael there & he told us some of the history of the park and showed us around.  It was a lovely walk.

Music Concert
We had a lovely day yesterday for our music concert.  It was great to have it out in our school yard.  Thanks to everyone who came to see our wonderful performances.  Well done to the music teacher Michael & all the music students who have been working so hard.  Have a look at some photos from the occasion:

Summer Sun
Ms. Casserly’s class were out making the most of the sunshine today and also getting in the world cup spirit by making flags for each of the participating countries.
It is great to see the sun shining, we hope it continues!

GAA President visits Newtowncashel
The sun was shining in Newtowncashel today for the visit of of the President of the GAA Liam O’Neill.  The girls were presented with their medals and it was a great occasion for all.  We presented him with a beautiful piece of sculptured bog oak to remind him of his visit.  He brought the Sam Maguire and the Liam McCarthy cup with him.  There was  a fantastic performance of ‘Amhran na gCupán’ by the older children.  Here is a video of part of the performance:

President of the GAA to visit
We are all looking forward to a special visitor tomorrow 30th May.  The president of the GAA Liam O’Neill will visit our school to chat to the older classes and to present the girls team with their medals at 11.30.  We look forward to welcoming him to our school.  Parents are welcome to attend.

School Tour
It was a very exciting day in our school on Thursday 22nd May.  The senior infants, 1st and 2nd classes went to Tullyboy farm and the 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th classes went to the zoo.  We all had a great day out.

    






The tour to Tullyboy farm involved a tractor and trailor ride, a barrell ride, feeding lots of animals, a straw dive and some time in the playground.  It was great fun having a picnic to eat our lunch and playing in the sand area.  We had a great day out.

Football Final Winners
Well done to the girls on winning the division 4 final in Pearse Park on Wednesday last.  It was a hot evening and the girls worked so hard to get the win.
There was great celebrations and everyone came back to the club house for refreshments.  Thank you to the parents association for organising this and thank you to the two Johns for the great training.

Football Final
We would like to wish our Girls football team the very best of luck in the Division 4 football final this evening.  The match is at 5.00 in Pearse park and we hope there is a great turn out to support the girls.  Well done on getting this far!

Write a book project
Everyone in our school from Senior Infants up as far as 6th class took part in the ‘Write a book’ project.  It was a lot of work but we really enjoyed it.  
We were very proud of all the books we produced.We swapped books with a similar class in another school.  Each class had some merit awards and some highly commended awards.

         


There was an awards evening in the Landmark Hotel in Carrick on Shannon where the merit awards were given out.
Well done to everyone!

Knitting
3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Class have taken out their knitting needles & wool and with the help of Ms. Casserly, Gabrielle, Mrs. Casserly & Ms. Fallon are busy knitting.

    


We will post again in a few weeks with some of our creations.

School Tour
We are very excited in Newtowncashel because our school tour is next Thursday 22nd May.  The Senior Infants, 1st & 2nd classes will travel to Tullyboy Farm in Co. Roscommon.



The 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th classes will travel to Dublin and visit Dublin Zoo.  We have been keeping an eye on the webcams in the zoo and we spotted the new baby giraffe this week.

GAA Football Blitz
On Tuesday 13th May the boys and girls in 3rd & 4th class went  to Ballymahon to take part in a gaelic football blitz.  There were four schools there taking part.  The teams were all mixed up and it was a great day out.

Green Flag
Our application was successful for our ‘Bio-diversity’ flag.  This is our fifth green flag and we are delighted after the effort made over the past two years.
The flag will be presented to the school on Thursday 22nd May & we will mark the occasion in school later in the year.

SWIMMING
The boys and girls in 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th class started swimming lessons in Roscommon leisure centre today.  They will be going every Friday until the summer holidays.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
There are six boys and girls in second class busy preparing for their First Holy Communion.  It will take place on Sunday 11th May at 12.00.

RE-PLANTING CEREALS
Tilla came back in this week to help us move our cereals from inside our classroom to our garden outside.  They had progressed well inside in the warm classroom.  We hope they get on well outside too!

BROAD BEAN EXPERIMENT
A few weeks ago we put up some photos of our broad bean science experiment in Ms. Stenson’s room.  Here is an update of our experiment – We were surprised that the one with no light grew so tall and so quickly but it didn’t look as healthy as the one with light.

FEILE ATHLONE
On Tuesday 8th April the children from 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th class went to Athlone.  They took part in Feile in the Dean Egan Theater.  They were on a big stage and did a fantastic performance.  They got to look at some other schools take part too.  It was a great day out.
Thank you to the parents who traveled to support them on the day.

PLANTING CEREALS
Jos’ mum Tilla came in to the junior and senior infants to help them plant some cereals.  It was a beautiful spring day & it was great to be out in the outdoor classroom.  They planted wheat, oats & buckwheat.  They used recycled toilet roll holders to plant them in.
They must kept inside at the moment and will be watered every two days. We will keep you posted on the development of them over the next few weeks.

A VISIT FROM A MAGICIAN
On Friday we were very lucky when a magician visited our school.   Everyone got to watch his show and then he showed us how he made some of his puppets using recycled materials.
The 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th classes then got to make their own puppets using recycled materials they had brought in.
A big thank you to Longford County Council for providing us with this wonderful opportunity as part of our Green Schools program.

LENREC
Lenrec Ltd., will collect new and used men’s, women’s & children’s clothing, shoes, belts, handbags, ties, linens, household textiles, stuffed toys etc in any condition once they are clean.  Collection is on Wednesday 26th.  Bags should be left at the school gate or in the sheds at the rear, before 9.30 a.m.

BOOK FAIR
There is a book fair coming to our school tomorrow.  It will be here for the week.  There will be lots of books on display & the children will get a chance to look at the books and buy them.  Parents are invited to look at the display of books from 8.50 – 9.20 each morning & from 2.00 – 2.30 (infants) & 3.00 – 3.30 each day for the week.  We are looking forward to seeing the book fair & remember that every book bought helps to earn more books for our school.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The theme of our float in the St. Patrick’s day parade was ‘Bio-diversity’.  Everyone made such a good effort to dress up and get involved.  Well done to the Parent’s Association who organised it.
We were so happy when we won ‘Best Junior Float’ in the parade.

We were very busy in Newtowncashel on Wednesday 12th March, each class planted some seeds.  We will be watching them eagerly over the next few weeks to see how they are getting on!

Music

Children in 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th class are very busy practicing for Feile which will be on in the Dean Crow Theatre Athlone on 8th April 2014.

Spring Cleaning in Mrs Dervin’s

March 11, 2014 Mrs Dervin’s room went outside today to do some spring cleaning.  They  picked up all the twigs and branches that had blown down over the winter storms.  They also picked up litter that was lying around.
It was great to be out in the beautiful spring sunshine!




A special visitor

Yesterday we had a very special visit from Bishop Francis Duffy. He came to speak to the 5th and 6th class children. They had lots of questions prepared for him. The 5th and 6th class children are busy preparing for their Confirmation which will be on March 22nd in the church.


First Confession
March 7, 2014
The children in second class had their first confession last night in the church. They read the story of the lost sheep. They will soon start preparing for their First Holy Communion, it will be in May. Six children from second class will be making their First Holy Communion.
