MAY WALK
The Tidy Towns annual nature walk takes place on Bank Holiday Monday the 4th of May.
This is always a beautiful walk on the roads around Lough Slawn because of its high heritage value.
Lough Slawn and the surrounding meadows have now been given special protection in the Longford Co. Development Plan because of the rare plant life that has been allowed to develop over the last 50 years.
Dr Catherine Farrell, an Ecologist with Bord na Mona will give a talk on this unique area at the end of the walk.
Valuable prizes will be raffled for all who take part.
The walk starts from The Hill at 2:30 pm.

The Irish Cancer Society’s Care to Drive service is currently seeking volunteer drivers to drive local patients to and from their chemotherapy treatments. We are looking for volunteers to pick patients up at their homes, drive them to the door of the hospital, pick them up when they are finished their treatment and bring them home again. HARVEST FESTIVAL
The Harvest Festival will be held in Newtowncashel on Sunday the 23rd of August, commencing at 12.00 noon. This will be the festival's third consecutive visit to Newtowncashel, thanks to the availability and suitability of the site and the success of the event on the two previous occasions. Congratulations to everyone that won yesterday at our field events. Training will commence on these events as soon as the track events are over. Track events this Friday evening on GAA pitch with first race off at 5:30pm. Registration at 5:00. €2 entry fee per child and anyone that hasn’t registered earlier in the year it’s another €2.

DEATH
The death occured on Tuesday the 21st of April last of Danny Farrell ,Elfeet and Inchcleraun.Danny was one of life's true gentleman,a hardworking family man who lived his life with honesty and integrity.All his life he had a tremendous affinity with the lake Lough Ree,from when he was born right through to his passing.His death will leave a huge void in the lives of all those who knew him.To his wife Monica,daughters Breda,Bernadette,Monica,sons Herbert and Donall, and all his many family and friends,we extend our deepest sympathy.May his Soul Rest in Peace.
PIONEER QUIZ
Congratulations to the U13 pioneer quiz team from St Marys National School who, after a mammoth tie breaker round of 14 questions came 3rd in the All Ireland Pioneer Quiz final held in the Hotel Kilmore in Cavan on Saturday last 25/04/15. The team consisted of Cathy Kelly, Mark Brehon, Luke Mulvihill, David Sweeney and Harry Murray. The team would like to thank the Newtowncashel Branch of the Pioneer Association for sponsoring refreshments on the day and also the day out in Mountmellick at the regional final held 29/03/15.

CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP
The Student Scholarship,sponsored by Ballymahon and District Credit Union is operational again this year. It is open to all Leaving Cert students attending the Vocational and Mercy Secondary Schools. The student must be completing a FÁS Apprenticeship, full time Certificate, Diploma or Degree course at any University, IT or approved third level college. All students who wish to enter the draw, must be a member of the Credit Union before the 31st of May 2015.The recipient of the Scholarship will receive €1000.00 per annum for a maximum of three years.
