PLOUGHING
Longford Ploughing will host a Novice Match in Brian and Tess Doyle's stubble field beside the village on this Saturday at 12noon. Some readers will recall memories of the Match in the Priest's field in 1969 or in PJ O'Dowd's and Tom Mulvihill's in 1970. There was also a Match in Mahedy's 1948. Now is a chance to bring your own tractor and plough, shine the mouldboards and have it perfect for the next ploughing project at home. First time participants will receive guidance on completing a plot to competition standard, under NPA rules. Ladies and lads are welcome and the fee is €10. Some competition ploughs will be available for sharing. Advice on tractor and plough settings, adjustments and attachments will help to achieve a better seedbed, a cleaner healthier crop and also save time and diesel on the farm. So all young farmers can learn tips that will last a lifetime from tutors who compete at the National Ploughing. May the sun shne in Cashel on Saturday. Spectators are welcome to join the meithil and enjoy tea and sandwiches on the headland. Follow longfordploughing on facebook for updates and see Nathan Carter shining at a wet ploughing bootcamp last April.

PIONEERS
Last Sunday,Temperance Sunday, was again a big day for the Pioneers of Newtowncashel when emblems were presented at the 10.30 a.m. Mass by Fr Gerard Brady. It was very satisfying to see so many teenagers prepared to take up the challenge to stay off alchol until they are sixteen and hopefully go on to become full pioneers at eighteen years.Well done also to those who recieved their Silvercand Gold emblems. There are many advantages in becoming a pioneer and no one has ever come forward to say they regretted it.
Last weekend,Johnny Bawle, one of the pioneer jubilerans passed to his eternal reward.Johnny was a great socialiser and took part in and organised many concerts in the Tom Ashe Hall years ago.To his family and friends we tender our deepest sympathy.May his gentle Soul Rest in Peace.
