Notes 18/08/2014 - Newtowncashel - Co. Longford

DEATH
The parish of Newtowncashel was plunged into deep sadness and shock last Sunday, when news filtered out about of the death  of Elaine Bawle , nee Brady, Portanure. Elaine had fought a long  courageous battle with illness with, but it still was such a profound shock to hear of her passing.
Elaine was a kind, beautiful and wonderful person, who everybody had so many good things to say about. She was a caring and loving mother and wife ,and her passing will leave a deep vacuum in the lives of those close to her.
To her heartbroken family, particularly her Husband John, children  Conor ,Katie, and John Jnr. and all her family and friends, we extend our deepest sympathy.
May her Soul Rest in Peace.

A public meeting will be held in the Hill on Wednesday night the 20 Aug 14 @ 9 O'clock with the view of setting up a local text alert. This is about your safety, your families safety and the safety of your Parishes.
It is very important that there is a large turn out on the night.

THE RAY FLYNN MILE
The Co. Longford Tourism Committee is hosting the inaugural Ray Flynn Mile in Longford Town on Saturday, the 23rd August, in honour of the Longford native, who holds the Irish record for the 1500 meters and the mile, as well as a world record as part of an all-Irish 4*1 mile relay team. This race will be run on the Ballinalee Road, begining at the roundabout and finishing at St Mels Cathedral Car Park. The meeting point will be the enterprise centre on the Ballinalee road. The event will help form part of a running festival weekend in Longford, that includes the 13th Annual Longford Marathon, scheduled for Sunday the 24th of August. The Ray Flynn event will include an elite race, an over 40s race, and juvenile races. People who just want to support the Tourism committee are most welcome and are invited to walk the mile with friends or family. Registration is €10 for adults and €4 for juveniles, and advance registration is available through Eventbrite,  www.eventbrite.ie . People who are registered to run in the marathon on the following day can run the mile event at a subsidised fee of €5.

THE ROYAL CANAL HERITAGE WALK
As part of National Heritage Week, Longford Tourism are hosting a heritage walk along the route of The Royal Canal from Richmond Harbour in Clondra. Led by Fr Tom Murray this interesting and informative walk will take in some of the beautiful scenery of the newly opened Royal Canal Cycleway. Refreshments will be served afterwards in The Richmond Inn, Clondra. The walk starts at 7.30pm on Tuesday evening 26th August

HARVEST FESTIVAL
The Harvest Festival and Field Day,takes place on Sunday the 31st of august,commencing at 12.00 noon.central to the festival,is the harvesting of wheat and oats by vintage machinery,both horse drawn and tractor driven.As it co-incides with C emetery sunday in Cashel,it is hoped that those people returning to Cashel will include the Festival in their schedule.Proceeds go to St.Christophers.

CEMETERY SUNDAYS
Saint's Island Cemetery,24th of August.
Cashel Cemetery,31st of August.
These Masses will replace the 10.30 a.m. Mass in the Church.

PATTERN DAY
Pattern Day will be celebrated at Lady well,Derrydarragh,on Saturday the 6th of September.Mass follows recitation of the Rosary at p.m. This Mass will replace the Saturday evening Mass in the Church.

PARISH MISSION
The Vincentian 'Ember Team',will preach the Parish Mission,commencing on Saturday the 27th of September,and closing on Friday the 3rd of October. House to house visitation will take place the week prior to the mission.

PASTORAL COUNCIL
The Parish Pastoral Council will meet in The Hill on Tuesday the 26th of August,at 8.30 p.m.,to discuss plans and arrangements for the Parish mission.

DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE
The Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock,takes place on Sunday the 7th of September. The bus leaves The Hill at 10.00 a.m. tickets at €16.00 each are available at Kenny's Foodstore,Newtowncashel.
