Townland Trivia:
This week we look at Elfeet (Adamson) and (Burke), pronounced as written. First recorded in 1622 as Colfeed. Official name Oilfid (Adamson). The name has never been explained satisfactorily, but the original has two elements ‘Ui’ and ‘feed’ (in 1622 Colfeed and Ulfeed were both recorded) The latter remained the name, with minor spelling changes, one of them Ilfeed, and Edgeworths map said Elfeed, the final ‘d’ changed to a ‘t’ by the Ordnance Survey soon after. The early spellings implies two Irish words ‘oll’ and ‘fid’. For grammatical reasons oll becomes oil without a major change of sound, if it in combined with fid. It means ‘huge’ while fid (in modern Irish fiodh) has a range of meanings relating to timber or woodland. Feede mountain on the Louth / Armagh border is a bare rocky hill but may have been named for woodland which was once plentiful there. Elfeet is not rocky, Huge Woodland is a possible meaning.
Adamson may have been a previous owner of the townland, which changed hands in 1710. Elfeet (Burke) may have been an owner or middleman, leasing from a landlord.
Evidently the two Elfeets were a single unit at one time.
