Every Christmas Day, the annual Christmas Day Run/Walk for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) takes place from the South Longford village of Newtowncashel to the Shannonside town of Lanesborough. Now entering its 36th year, the event has grown from strength to strength since its inception in 1990 and has become a cherished part of the local Christmas festivities.

The 11km route attracts both competitive runners and those who simply wish to enjoy a leisurely run or walk. The event welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, creating a wonderful sense of community and togetherness on Christmas morning. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the event successfully moved online, with participants taking part virtually from Ireland, England, Thailand, and Australia.

Today, many people attend not only for the exercise but also for the opportunity to meet friends, enjoy a chat, and share in the festive spirit. Following the run/walk, refreshments and hot toddies are served in St. Mary’s Hall, Lanesborough, where participants gather for what has become a much-anticipated social occasion. Peter Hanley Motors generously sponsors the event T-shirts each year for participants, for which the organisers are extremely grateful.

The event was originally established as a fun run by Ger Flood. However, after learning that a friend and neighbour had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Ger decided to dedicate the event to raising funds for the Longford Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a condition in which the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves in the brain and spinal cord. This disrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body and can cause symptoms such as fatigue, numbness, muscle weakness, balance difficulties, and vision problems. Although there is currently no cure, treatments can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. The funds raised through the Christmas Day Run/Walk help support members of the Longford Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and contribute to services and supports for those living with MS.

A key feature of the Christmas Day Run/Walk is that costs are kept to an absolute minimum, with prizes being the only expense.  This ensures that as much money as possible goes directly towards supporting those living with MS. Participants leave each year with a great sense of achievement, knowing they have started Christmas Day in a healthy and positive way while also making a meaningful contribution to a worthy cause.

Since its inception, the event has raised close to €400,000 for the Longford Branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, with all proceeds remaining within the local community to support those affected by MS.
