History within the Competition

Newtowncashel joined the National Tidy Towns competition in 1977, shortly after the arrival of the committee founders Fr. Sean O’Rourke pp and Garda Gabriel Starkin.
The committee soon found its feet, and has thrived in the village ever since, highlighting the village's unique and quirky features. Although Newtowncashel is a relatively small, there is a variety of local groups of which the Tidy Towns committee is one of the most active.

In 1980 we achieved the highest accolade, being awarded the outright Winner of the National Tidy Towns Competition.

Throughout the years, the committee has worked hard on improving the village, and one of its biggest projects has been the rehabilitation of the Ballyrevagh quarry nearby.

The Quarry Park project was completed in 2000
The garden with its wild flowers contains some beautiful rock carvings as well as a walking trail,
christened "The Pursuit of Diarmuid and Grainne" after the legendary Celtic figures who fell in love and eloped, finally finding refuge in a wood beside the Shannon.
