New Water Pipe:
News from a meeting Longford Co Co had with Uisce Eireann last week is that the main pipeline from Ballagh to the reservoir in the village will be replaced this summer.
Work is due to commence towards the end of April. Contractors are Shareridge Ltd. and should be completed by end June 2026.
Customers can call Uisce Eireann on 1800 278 278 for more information.
This project will be seen as a big step forward in securing a proper trouble-free supply for most of the parish.
I see the large blue pipes being delivered today, so hopefully it’ll start and finish on time.
Townlands Trivia:
This week we look at the townland of Forthill, pronounced as fort-hill.
First recorded in 1588 as Forkhill. Official name fuarchoill. The place name is a mispronounciation, as the official Irish shows, Edgeworth was the first to say Fort, before him the name was spelled six different ways, all of them a combination of For/Four and Kill/Chill.
The correct name is duplicated in that of the village of Forkhill (foirceal) in Co Armagh
It is pronounced ‘forkle’ and said to mean a trough or hollow, which is not confirmed by the dictionary.
Fore- and Four- were pronounced fuar when written, so cold wood is likely, but was it forchill once?
Litter Cleanup:
A big thank you to scores of parishioners who volunteered their time and energy over last weekend to take part in our big clean up of all roads in Cashel parish, it is so good to see that volunteering and community spirit is still alive and well in Cashel.
While it’s positive to see such work, it’s also sad that people still litter our lovely parish, maybe some day they will get the message to respect parishioners and the environment they live in.
Below see the results of all the volunteer labour.
Crashes/Helicopters:
Sadly, we’ve been too familiar locally with the sights and news of crash victims being evacuated by helicopter from crash locations.
Two men were transferred to hospital from Derrylough recently while two pedestrians were transferred from Ledwithstown a couple of days earlier also by helicopter
Then some people we know who were involved in a car crash at Colehill were injured, two being transferred by ambulance and the driver by helicopter.
We surely need to slow down and take care of each other out there.

Bereaved:
We wish to extend sincere sympathy with the extended Walsh family from Derryhaun on the occasion of the passing of their sister Kay Walsh, which took place on 3rd April in Clonsilla Co. Dublin.
Many will remember the family, with some great footballers among them.
I have fond memories of listening to their parents, Michael and Ann in Derryhaun speaking in their native Gaelic, sadly something unusual back then.
Kays funeral mass took place in Clonsilla on Thurs last 9th April.
She is survived by her brothers John, Colm, Paddy, Stephen and Josie, sisters Mary and Margaret and a wide circle of extended family and friends.
Liam Finnegan.
