Cashel Community Games:

Huge Thank you to the community for coming out to support the kids in our local area community games athletics event which took place last

Sunday. A fabulous day was had by all and there were medals galore. The kids should be very proud of themselves!

20 kids will go through to the County event which will take place on the 7th June in the GAA grounds in Ballymahon.

The county event for Art/model making and handwriting takes place on the 13th June in St Joseph’s NS Longford town with 20 through to it also.

The local Committee have also asked parents to bear in mind next year they will need other parents to join the committee to help keep the

community games running in our area.

Further details will be available at the AGM in September or from any committee member.

Well done to all our young parishioners and to the parents/committee who work hard each to ensure all children get the opportunity to

partake and excel in their chosen activity.

Without such dedication all children would miss out, so for next season wouldn’t it be great if other parents put their shoulder to the wheel.

25 Card Drive Results:

The Results of Monday Nights Cards in the Local is as follows:

Winners: Pat and Geraldine Greene.

Runners Up: Tom Skelly and John O’Byrne

5 full tables of 6, great to see such interest in this age old pastime.

Thanks to Fiona and staff at the Local for hosting and refreshments served.

Townland Trivia:

This week we look at the townland of Loughfarm, pronounced Lawharm, first mention in 1813 as Lough Farm. Official Irish Name is Feirm

an Locha.

The townland lies along the shore of Lough Ree, not a single farm but a number of small holdings once held by the Newcomen family, who had

nearly 200 tenancies in this area of Co. Longford, the bulk of them in Cashel Parish.

In the 1800’s it’s buildings were clustered together at the end of a long path, suggesting that the name may recall a time when it was one unit, part of the townland of Elfeet which covers all of the area on the cotton map. A roadside picnic site is an outstanding viewpoint.

The Future of Barley Harbour:

A very positive public meeting with forty people in attendance was held in the Hill, Newtowncashel last night (Tuesday) to discuss the future development of Barley Harbour and the wider area.

There were some excellent ideas and strong community engagement on how we can work together to restore Barley Harbour to what it once

was — an important access point to Lough Ree and a valuable local amenity for residents and visitors alike.

A major issue raised on the night was the need to tackle ongoing antisocial behaviour in the area, with strong support for measures that would help make the harbour safer, more welcoming and enjoyable for families, locals and visitors.

Key priorities discussed included:

* Improving the access road into Barley Harbour

* Enhancing the harbour area as a beauty and recreational spot

* Upgrading slipway and boat access facilities into the harbour

* Addressing anti-social behaviour and improving the overall environment for the community

A sincere thank you to Paul Newell of Longford County Council who chaired the meeting, Councillor Martin Skelly, Sean Mimnagh, Mark Casey and Paul Ross and Deputy Micheál Carrigy for attending, and who are in full support of this important community discussion.

Great to see such strong local interest in shaping the future of the area, we hope more such meeting will take place in the coming months to formulate a plan for the future.

Liam Finnegan.
