Townland Trivia:

This week we look at Newtownflanigan, pronounced as written.
First recorded in 1836 as Newtownflanigan, official Irish name Baile Uí Fhlannagáin.

When a surname is added to a townland name it is generally that of the landowner, rather than a middleman letting to subtenants. Flanagan is a Co Roscommon name.
Possibly, he was indeed a middleman, but their names are usually inserted in brackets. There is no trace of a town.

St Mary’s Primary School Run:

Newtowncashel ICA Guild:

As we approach the ICA Summer Holidays, we wish our members a relaxing few months until we meet again on the 1st September.

Follow us on Facebook, Newtowncashel ICA, and Instagram, Ntcica.1989 to see what we got involved in over the past few months. Over the summer we will be at the ICA Cafe for the Longford Agricultural Show on Sunday 5th July.
We have summer tours to the Lost Valley in Louisburgh, Co Mayo and a day out in Co Fermanagh.

We will be getting our window flower boxes in full bloom for the ICA Garden Competition in August.
We also must keep an eye on our Brussel sprouts as judging time will come around in November.
Longford Federation ICA has a very active group. Follow them on Facebook to see the group activities they arrange for our Longford members. It's a great organisation for women who get together for walks, crafts, gardening, dancing, Pilates, days out and much more. ICA are hosting a garden party on 4th July in An Grianan, Termonfeckin, Co Louth.
You can follow them to see the many and varied events that they arrange and all members are welcome.

Bereaved:

We express our sincere sympathy with Patsy Mulvihill and family, Carrowbeg, and the extended Gilna family, on the passing of Patsy’s mother, Mary Gilna, Soran, Ballinalee, which occurred today Wednesday June 10th.

Granny Gilna, as we who were lucky to have known her was a pleasant, friendly and chatty woman with a word for everyone, she was 92 years young.

She is deeply regretted and sadly missed by her loving sons and daughters, her sister Eileen Bailey; her 38 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Removal to Holy Trinity Church, Ballinalee, Co. Longford on this Friday 12th June arriving at 6pm.
Funeral Mass on Saturday 13th June at 12 noon, followed by burial in St. Emer's Cemetery, Ballinalee.

Concert:

This Friday evening The Songbirds perform in St Johns Church, Battery Road, Longford at 7.30pm.
Local ladies who are members of this popular group include Anita Finnegan, Kathleen Delaney, Yvonne Kenny and Sandra Cassidy. A great evenings entertainment is assured.

Liam Finnegan.
