Longford Agricultural Show:
Last Sunday all roads let to Ennybegs and the annual Co. Longford Agricultural show, with light cloud cover, no rain and a nice breeze it was ideal conditions for this big annual event which drew huge crowds. Great organisation ensured the event ran as smooth as possible.
Great to meet so many from Cashel enjoying the day out and indeed we met Enda and Charmaine O’Shea and family, Forthill, who were showing some pedigree sheep from their excellent flock.
It would be great if the Show committee could in the early part of the year visit Schools in the county to encourage children to get involved in the many exhibits/classes from animal showing, crafts, handwriting etc, etc.
Road Works:
I’m sure all will be relieved to see that the laying of the mains water pipe from Ballagh to the Reservoir has reached the village and has turned the corner, so to speak as work has commenced on the section from The Local to the Reservoir, “off Piste” as they might say in skiing terms. Well done to the contractors involved as they have reinstated the road as they went along, with no mess or potholes to navigate for us locals.
Townland Trivia:
This week we look at the townland of Portanure, pronounced as purt-an-your.
First recorded in 1655 as Portenure. Official Irish name is Port and Iuir, a townland with a natural harbour on Lough Ree.
Landing place of the Yew Trees.
Portanure Bog, first recorded in 1836, official Irish name is Portach Phort an Iúir, near but not adjacent to Portanure but once owned by the same estate.
A rectangular area of bogland originally but, despite the name, two farm holdings in the 1840’s.

Make Hay while the Sun Shines:
With another great weeks weather and indeed forecast to last into next week as well, it’s a case of make hay while the sun shines, it’s non stop action with all in the farming community going flat out to save the harvest for next winter, the weather surely make it a lot easier.
Turf is also making its way to many homes in the parish, ensuring warmth and comfort next winter at a fraction of the cost of oil etc.
The Songbirds:
This popular singing group are busy with performances and growing popularity, recently they performed in Mohill, Co. Leitrim at the official opening of a new Café in the old, but fully restored stationhouse, a beautiful old building from a bygone age when Mohill had a train connection to Dromod, where they entertained a great crowd.
Then fresh on the heels of that they went to Thomond Lodge Nursing Home this week to entertain and bring a little joy to patients/residents of that facility.
Local ladies involved are Kathleen Delaney, Yvonne Kenny, Sandra Cassidy and Anita Finnegan.
Well done to all.
Liam Finnegan.
