To Fell or Not to Fell:

Sadly, winter is around the corner and no doubt wind, rain and the odd storm for good measure is assured, so the question as to what’s to be done with the dozens of ash trees along the roads of the parish which have suffered from “Die back Disease”. Without doubt, many of these will become casualties of winter storms so is it the responsibility of Longford Co Co’s or landowners to remove them. I see a councilor in Co. Mayo seeking to have Government assistance for farmers to cut these trees down.

Regardless of who is responsible, when a tree falls on some misfortunate during a storm, it‘s then that the you know what will hit the fan with the blame game. In the past year in Cashel, we’ve had two serious accidents at the same junction within one week, with the possibility of a sign, totally hidden by overgrown vegetation been a contributing factor. So should all stake holders get together soon to resolve the problem, before serious injury or even a fatality happens.

Road works:

The village has been busy this week with roadworks at the Local and at the crossroads beside the GAA pitch. This will bring a big improvement to road surface in the village and is very welcome.

All roads lead to Offaly:

This week all roads lead to the National Ploughing Championships being in held in Screggan outside Tullamore in Co. Offaly and young and not so young will make the annual pilgrimage to the holy grail of all things agricultural and beyond.

This year the local children wanting to travel had, by chance a day off school on today, Wednesday so no excuse not to travel. We hope all enjoyed the occasion.

We congratulate Lauren Mulvihill, Carrowbeg and Luke Hassett, the Village on successfully coming through the soccer trials for Under 12 Longford Town inter league development squads.

Both start training with the squad this week and we wish them all the best as they pursue their dreams.

Reconnection and Recollection of Bord na Mona and ESB:

Saturday week 26th September will prove to be a powerful day (pardon the pun) in the community as we welcome former workers and their families back to Lanesboro for a Bord na Mona and ESB Reconnection and Recollection Day.

The committee has been gathering memories of past glory days and all will be on display in the parish hall. Former workers and their families and students of the local primary schools of Lanesboro, Fermoyle, Cloontuskert, Ballyleague, Ballagh, Curraghroe, Cloontagh and Lanesboro Community College (formerly Lanesboro Vocational School) of BnM and ESB that lived and gave so much to our community and the wider area will be welcomed to meet and catch up with former workers or indeed former schoolmates.

We also welcomed and housed many apprentices in our community as they completed their training at Lanesboro Vocation School, now Lanesboro Community College and we would love to welcome them back to relive their memories in Lanesboro. Lanesboro, Ballyleague and the surrounding communities were very fortunate to have BnM and ESB power station in our community and we were equally fortunate in the calibre of people that came to work and live amongst us and they are still fondly remembered to this day.

It is amazing that people from all over the country that came from the very outset are still being quoted and mentioned with a great fondness and respect.

There is a general and wide invitation to everyone and their families to visit the hall between 10 and 4pm and enjoy the company of former workers and old friends.

This is a wonderful opportunity for everybody to come to the hall for the exhibition and welcome the people back to our community.
