Halloween:
It’s fast approaching, a tradition which began in the distant past in Celtic Ireland.
Samhain the holiday started over 2,000 years ago in Ireland, as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest and the start of the new year.
At this time the Celts believed the border between the living world and the spirit world blurred on the night of October 31, allowing ghosts and supernatural beings to cross over.
Traditions:
Jack-o'-Lanterns: People originally carved glowing faces into turnips, potatoes, or beets in Ireland.
Costumes and Masks: Ancient Celts wore disguises and lit bonfires to hide from or confuse roaming spirits, a practice that evolved into modern costume parties and trick-or-treating.
Trick-or-Treating: This custom grew out of medieval "souling"
(where poor people begged for soul cakes in exchange for prayers).
With all that in mind, it’s hoped to have somethings around the village to mark this festive time.
More details next week.
